Conversations with Marc Broussard

Nothing to do with work really....just a fun day being educated about a bill introduced in Utah by Mr. Marc Broussard via twitter. Posted here because I think it's cool

Me:Utah passed a law to prosecute women who have miscarriages. @marcbroussard I need your input on this fuckery

Marc: Okay so, the real intent of this law is to eliminate a loophole in the law to allow for prosecuting a mother who intentionally tries to harm the baby in the womb. Unfortunately, it creates a new loophole that could be interpreted to include all sorts of behaviors of a pregnant woman like smoking, drinking, etc. My question is, how is it double homicide when a man, or woman for that matter, kills a pregnant woman, even if that woman is on her way to abort the baby? It seems really strange that the state views the child in the womb differently in the two scenarios, muredered pregnant woman and woman in abortion clinic.

Me: interesting. i understand the intent of the law to protect children in the womb, but i think "miscarriages" is the wrong word to use here, because most women view miscarriages as something out of their control. true, they can be forced, usually not

Marc: The law was proposed in response to a 17 yr old girl that paid a 21 yr old boy to beat her in an attempt to induce late term mis. The guy that initiated the bill is pro-life and admitted the bill was also to impose stronger restrictions while denying the claim that the law would be used against miscarriages generally. Btw, the 17 yr old had a healthy baby and the boy is in jail. Though the 17 yr old got off because of a loophole in law that the new law was trying to correct. But maybe you knew all that :0/

Me: not really. thanx. but to me thats violence against a person...i just have an issue with them using the term miscarriage
